Who we are
Support for New Mums is a volunteer led program for mothers in the Tweed & Byron Shires.
We are a home visiting program, free of charge, for all mothers with babies, not just first time mums. We support mums in the last trimester of pregnancy, the first year of their baby’s life and beyond if needed.
Our trained volunteers visit mums in their homes each week and are dedicated to giving individual support to ensure the health and wellbeing of mums and their babies.
You need to take care of yourself.
Becoming a mother can be one of life’s greatest joys, but it certainly does not come without challenges. Caring for a baby regardless of whether it’s your first, second or even third is definitely a learning curve for every mother.
It is important to recognize that you are not alone and you have a community of support behind you. Asking for help is not something to be ashamed of, but rather a healthy behavior for yourself and your baby.
As a mother it is quite natural to become selfless, but it is incredibly important that you take care of yourself in order to take better care of your baby.
what we do
Our volunteers offer non-judgmental and confidential support, which can be as simple as Chatting over a cup of tea or giving you time for yourself.
Their primary role is as a support person for you & to interact/care for your baby as required and to offer advice if requested.
Who are our volunteers?
Our volunteers are mothers themselves, are trained in providing individual support and have clearance to work with children.
They are passionate about improving the wellbeing of mothers by reducing isolation, anxiety and depression.
They are carefully matched according to each mum’s needs and circumstances and provide two hours of confidential support each week.
Feedback
Of all the support services I accessed in my baby’s first year, I found Support for New Mums to be the most worthwhile.
My volunteer has been such a good listener and so understanding. Thanks so much Support for New Mums for caring so much and helping during this time. I cannot thank you enough for the support I have received.
We are so grateful for this group and can’t recommend them enough!
I honestly believe that I am a better mum, a better friend and a better partner having this support service available to give me a little break and provide me with the reassurance that I needed during this transitional time of becoming a mum.
Highly recommend and hope that this brings confidence to new mums to reach out and ask for help whenever you need it
I don’t have friends or family in the area and I was feeling lonely and isolated and was getting quite depressed. Having a volunteer visit each week really helped to lift my spirits.
As a nurse/midwife for over 47 years, this is the first time I've come across such a beautiful free support initiative for new mums, as one that Deb Hunt has set up in the Northern Rivers
